11 November 2025, Desaru-Malaysia: After completing an Open Water Lifesaving course yesterday, the ISA Surf Instructor Level 1 course presented by JomSurf began today at the newly opened JomSurf Surf Shop with 16 participants from location in Malaysia including Johor, Pahang, Perak, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor as well as Singapore and Indonesia.
This is the second ISA Surf Instructor Level 2 course presented by JomSurf in Desaru, the first was held in January of 2024 and has the distinction of being the first ISA Surf Instructor course ever to be held in Malaysia.
In addition to the Open Water and ISA Surf Instructor Level 11 courses, this program that runs from 10-15 November includes 3 days of practical training at Tanjung Balau Beach, the site of the JomSurf Surf School after two days of classroom/beach instruction. The goal of combining the Open Water and Level 1 Surf Instructor course with the practical training is to meet the ISA’s certification requirements that include 20 hours of experience under the direction of a qualified ISA Presenter. Final certification is of course dependent upon the evaluation of their understanding and performance by the ISA Presenter.

Jonni Morrison-Deaker from Bali, Indonesia is again the ISA Presenter for this program. Morrison-Deaker has been surfing and teaching surfing along with other watersports including SUP, Foiling and Kite Surfing for over 20 years, and heads up the Rip Curl School of Surf in Bali.
For this course, he is being assisted by Mitchell Cini, who has recently hosted ISA courses in Sabah at Waterfly Bornea and is in training to become an ISA Presenter, and Sam Fernandez, also from Waterfly Borneo, who is in ISA Supervisor training.
Today the participants went through subjects including the role and qualities of a coach, surf etiquette, code of ethics, and on to surf and weather conditions, rips and sweeps, risk management, and venue analysis, Tomorrow morning will see the continuation of classroom instruction at the JomSurf Surf Shop, and then in the afternoon instruction will move to Tanjung Balau Beach for the more hands-on parts of the course.
The following three days will see the participants spending their time at the beach, putting into practice what they have learned in a real-life setting and under the supervision and direction of an qualified ISA Presenter.
The ISA Surf Instructor Level 1 Course is organized by JomSurf and supported by the Asian Surf Cooperative (ASC) and the International Surfing Association (ISA).
