18 July 2025, Covelong Point, Tamil Nadu – Tipi Jabrik’s Grom Patrol India wrapped up yesterday at Covelong Point in great weather conditions and with excellent 2–3 foot waves, providing India’s top junior surfers the perfect opportunity to show off their best performances and claim victory. For the Under 18 and Under 16 divisions, at stake was the coveted prize of a reserved spot in the Grom Patrol Bali Final in August.
Winning both the Under 16 and Under 18 Girls Division—and her spot in the Grom Patrol Bali—was India’s number one female junior surfer, 15-year-old Kamali Moorthy from Mahabalipuram, who posted high scores and put her mature surfing on display.

“I’m so happy to have won today, as I’ve been training and working hard,” said Moorthy. “The waves today, on a scale of 1 to 10, were a 7 or even an 8, so it was fun and great to get good waves in this contest. In the Under 18 final it was a bit tricky as the current got strong and it was a bit bouncy, but overall it was really great.”
When asked about winning her ticket to Bali, she added, “I’ve been to Bali before for training with the team, and I really like it there, so I’m so excited to come there again and compete in the Bali final.”
Competing in both the Under 16 and Under 18 Boys Divisions—and at just 12 years old—Moorthy’s little brother Harish P not only won the Under 16 but also placed 2nd in the Under 18. Although short in stature, Harish is larger than life once he hits the water, making big carving turns and attacking the lip with aggression, earning him his place on top of the podium and a ticket to the Bali Final.
“I was very nervous in my finals today because I really wanted to win and go to Bali,” said Harish. “I’ve been there before and love to surf at Kuta and Canggu, so I can’t wait to go there next month and surf again,” he added.
Although the Under 18 win was no surprise in the end, Covelong’s own Kishore Kumar had a tougher than expected battle against runner-up Harish P. Kumar held the highest single-wave score of the heat—a 6.83—but had no strong backup, while Harish kept busy posting mid-range scores that kept him in the lead until near the end of the 30-minute final. Patience and smart wave selection gave Kumar the opportunity he needed to post a 4.97 late in the final to jump into the lead and take the win.

“The waves were way better today than yesterday, and it was great to have some good waves to give me an opportunity to show my surfing,” said Kumar. “I have been competing a lot and recently went to Indonesia to compete in the Krui Pro, and I learned a lot from that experience. I’m excited to win today so I can go to Bali to compete in the Grom Patrol Final… I really like Kuta Beach and hope I can do well there.”
After the finals, the awards presentation was held at Surf Turf to officially announce the winners and for them to receive their trophies and accolades.
Sponsor and presenter Arun Vasu took the microphone and addressed the audience, and while congratulating the winners, he also encouraged the others, saying, “For those that didn’t make the finals, you just have to keep practicing, as there will be many more events like this, so you’ll be there next year. Don’t worry about it, okay?”

Vasu has been an ardent supporter of Indian surfing for more than a decade and sees development programs like the Grom Patrol for this younger generation as the best way forward.
“I really want to thank the ASC, Tipi and Tim, for starting this Grom Patrol program and bringing it to India,” said Vasu. “I think it’s the best thing that is happening in surfing, especially for us in India. We need to have hundreds of kids involved each year so we can progress and compete at a higher level. And for the winners to go to Bali is such a great gift—I mean, for the kids it’s really a golden opportunity.”
The first Tipi Jabrik’s Grom Patrol India presented by Arun Vasu took place in Mangalore on 24 May under typhoon-like monsoon conditions, which challenged the groms but didn’t allow them to fully showcase their abilities. In contrast, the Covelong stop offered up glassy and predictable wave conditions, giving them the chance to demonstrate not only their surfing performance but also mental discipline, including patience, wave selection, and following priority rules.
The 2025 Grom Patrol season will culminate in a Grand Final at Kuta Beach, Bali, from 22–24 August, where the top performers from all international stops will join Indonesia’s best groms for an exciting season finale. Event winners and overall 2025 champions in each division will be crowned.
